Thingvallavatn literally means "Lake where the parliament is held". On the northwestern banks of the lake lies the old Thingvellir, where the Vikings held their "things", which in old Norse means a parliament, or a place where one would gather to discuss grievances, disagreements, make and interpret laws and elect leaders.
I'll have more on Thingvellir later, but we had a drive along the lake on Thursday. Due to fog and sideways snow, we had to turn back before we got to explore the site of the Things (today a national park), but we got in some great views of the water and the surrounding coastline.
All pics.
I believe this mountain, lightly shrouded in wind and fog was Langjökull, "Long Glacier".
Winding road.
Even more winding.
There were several cabins down by the water.
View across the lake to Langjökull.
View from the top of Hengill.
