Tuesday night, we stuffed face on some really good grub, so I thought I'd make a quick post about it. Then we kept on eating our way through the south, so I thought I'd expand it to a general food porn post. The dishes span from crawfish to chicken to peanut butter banana sandwich, so there's sumfin' for everyone here...
Tuesday, we had a somewhat more expensive dinner than our usual junk food fare. We went to the very nice Riverfront restaurant in Vicksburg. Astrid had soft shell crab, I had Hawaiian chicken and we split some Maryland crabcakes as starters. Sadly I didn't think to take pics until it had all been eaten, so you'll have to take my word for it that it was yummy. The only thing I managed to photograph was the dessert, a key lime pie that was eye watering in size and taste.
Today we stopped at Abe's for breakfast. Abe's is a place that's been operating along Highway 61 in Clarksdale since 1924. Astrid had the chicken salad, I stuffed face on a beef sandwich. Both the food and the decor was authentic southern, and we also chatted a bit with some people in the restaurant whose accent definitely showed them to be locals. I just LOVE hearing "y'all" come naturally...
Lunch on Wednesday was taken at Graceland, where I just HAD to try the special: Peanut butter and banana sandwich. It was greasy to the touch and I don't even like peanut butter, also the sandwich was disappointingly small... but down it went. Astrid, as usual, had a chicken salad.
For dinner we went to the Blues City Cafe at the corner of Beale and Second, and gorged on various foodstuff. We shared the dishes, so we got a taste of everything. For appetizers we had tamale (imagine a strangely bland, crumbling hot dog) & chili and a gumbo with shrimp & crawfish and for dinner we had a combo of pork ribs and fried catfish, with a side order of six shrimps in a skillet. I was shameless enough to have an apple crumble with ice for dessert. Let me tell you... it was a food orgy.
All pics here.
The key lime pie.
The beef sandwich at Abe's.
Peanut butter and banana sandwich at Graceland.
Crawfish and shrimp gumbo with rice. Spicy, tasty and gooood.
Tamales. Meh.
The inside didn't look very appetizing either.
Chili.
Shrimp. Yum, yum.
Fried catfish. Tasted like generic, white fish.
Pork ribs in a delicious BBQ sauce. The coleslaw was also good; surprisingly fresh in taste.
My dessert. Despite my best attempts, Astrid wouldn't have a bite. More for meeeeeeeeee! Sizzling hot apple pie with cinnamon, on a delicious, baked layer of dough. Ice cream on top. Oh. My. God.
In the end, we made an unholy mess. We were covered in several layers of grease and food. But we were stuffed and content, and that's what matters at the end of every meal.
