RIP Chathouse

Today I learned of the "passing" of a website that once meant a lot to me. I was first introduced to web chatting in the fall of 1995, when we finally got computer labs at my college in Oslo. Sometime in the spring of 1996 I wound up at Chathouse - http://www.chathouse.com/ - and it was to be my home away from home for several years. I must have talked to thousands of people, and some of them remain my friends to this day. Many of them I have met in person on my American travels, but also in Canada, England, Scotland and even Sweden I've met chatters.

I have (mostly) fond memories of chatting into the wee hours during my carefree student days, and in spite of the generally horrible spelling and grammar found in such places, I do believe it helped my English considerably. I talked to people in the US and Canada on the phone several times, which helped my spoken English, and my first visit to the US in 1997 was to meet chat friends - indeed I am meeting one of them in California later this year!

The place sadly started to go into a long decline in the late 90s as it became clear that the operators no longer cared. As with any large social group, there were fights and intrigue and people backstabbing each other. I know for a fact some started real life sexual affairs with people they met online and The Chathouse broke up (but also led to) several marriages. Friends and enemies were made, but at some point is seems people had just had enough of the worsening atmosphere. Internal rules were broken, people harassed, head games played and the administrators were absent throughout it all.

I still went back there now and then, although few of the old gang hung around. I made some new friends, had some fun, but it just wasn't like it used to be. The last few years, most of the "floors" and "rooms" have been closed down, and I can't even remember the last time I went in there to chat - it must have been early 2008 if not late 2007. Since then I've checked in maybe once a month or so, but no one I knew was ever around.

Today I was greeted with a message that said the domain name had expired on March 6. I guess this means the owners no longer had any revenue and decided to pull the life support for good.

The Internet has changed our world in so many profound ways, and I know for sure Chathouse changed mine. Chathouse allowed me to practice my English daily with native speakers, it taught me a lot about many people and places, it allowed me to make many good friends and it provided me with innumerable laughs. I can safely say my life would be different, and mostly for the worse without Chathouse.

Goodbye, old friend, from the chatter known as Aton. I shall miss you.

I started chatting at chathouse back in December 1996. It truly was fascinating to me at the time. I was there almost everyday for several months until around spring 1997. Afterwards, I still visited at times but not nearly as often.

At any rate, I still have a bit of nostalgia for the place... especially for the "Hot Tub" and "Beach" rooms.

Although I changed to chatting at another chat site in spring 1997, I can say that the chathouse was the very first I started going to.

Like your first car, it's difficult to forget !

The wife and I lived in the Lipstick for at least 3 years. Along with Albertine there. Hiya Hon. Caddyqueen says Hi, too. LTNS.

I still check the place periodically just to see if anyone is around, and I still blame the room "foums" for the demise.

Those things changed the nightly disputes that were quickly forgotten into feuds that could rage for months and suck in entire rooms.

I was a regular on the first floor back in that day, too. I started out as grapeape and then went to Purple Passion (or as pandamonium in the West Wing). I recognize a few of the old names that Jenny mentioned!

Had a great time there most times and "met" all sorts of fun and intriguing people. But, it's bittersweet for me, too, since the Chathouse was the source of my ex's cyber-turned-real indiscretion. Out of it though, I met the man of my dreams through happenstance on the first floor, and we're still together. Life has a funny way of working itself out. =)

Toodles!

I was a regular in the Downstairs, moving from room to room, causing trouble (mostly the good kind). Made some terrific friends and met some special people. The mid nineties were kinda a chat discovery time and the Chathouse opened me up in alot of ways. Thanks for posting this, good memories.

I also was a very (probably too much) regular back in the day.. Pretty much every night remember struggling to get into the room to chat as it was regularly full - second floor, cant remember the room, but Reverend, Ugly, Magnum, Unibum, Oranges, Euphoria, just to name a few..

Even met my ex-mistake there.. I flew to USA met up with her, live in South Dakota for a year, did the big bus trip down to Arizona to meet up with some friends - then we moved back to Aussie, got married, had 2 kids, house etc... and lived miserably ever after.

Still get some emails from one or 2 of the old crew, but often wonder what became of them - and the place.

I used to be a regular when I was all of 15. I made friends from other countries, I found an outlet for my miserable teenage angst, had inappropriate conversations, and thought I fell in love with a guy who called himself surfpunk. I was so young, so silly and so naive! But I regret nothing. Whoever you really were and wherever you are, know you made a difference in my life and led me to where I am today. Even though none of it was real, thank you. I still have some of the presents you mailed me from LA. LOL

So there was a reddit asking what was your first memory of the internet. Mine is the many hours spent at the chathouse. I googled it, and ended up here. My username was cathork. There are a couple of usernames mentioned above that ring a bell. Also remember a user called OnLeatheryWings or somesuch. good times.

I used to spend hours in the Chathouse daily. I’ve had so many online profiles since then I don’t know what my handle was.

Remember some of the popular rooms had limited space and you’d have to refresh the page repeatedly hoping to get in?

Miss it everyday

I was a regular in the Hot Tub in the very late 90's and 2000. I had so much fun staying up all night and socializing in there, although it was a very dramatic time as well. I made "friends" that wound up stabbing me in the back, got to know and almost actually met a guy that really wasn't worth any of my time or effort, and actually spoke with some truly wonderful people (shout out to Raspberry Tea who also posted within these comments). I recognize so many handles of people commenting within this comment section....

I occasionally wonder what everyone is up to and really wish I had kept in touch with the few gems of people I got to know who were honestly wonderful people during my time in the Hot Tub. Oh well. I hope you all are doing well.

I was thinking about the Chathouse today and did some googling and found this place. I started chatting in about 1998, I think, I do remember a lot of the names mentioned my handle was Godric. I married Jade from the chathouse in 2004 and in 2010 cancer took her from me. The chathouse gave me a lot of good memories. If you remember chatting with me say Hi ejpremier62@hotmail.com

Michael said...

I also was thinking about Chathouse today. I was there from 98 to 00. No clue what any of my handles were since I kept a different one for each room. It was my first introduction to the internet and got me interested in HTML which led to my career as a web developer. I was asked today what my experience with coding was and Chathouse was the place. I also met my first love there, got my heart broken there, and broke free of my shyness and social anxiety there.

I miss this enough that I'm going to rebuild a similar site because I miss the golden age of internet chat enough that I'm willing to spend some money on it, even if nothing comes of it.

Anyways I hope your well take care me old china

A lot of those in my eighth grade class used to get on there and chat during downtime in keyboarding class in 1996. And then when I would go over to friends houses that didn’t have metered connections, I would hang out on there until the wee hours during high school. Unfortunately, I don’t think I ever made any lasting connections on there.

In retrospect, it’s kind of crazy that our teacher allowed us as 13 and 14-year-olds to talk to random‘s unsupervised during class time, but it seemed perfectly normal at the time.

Unknown said...

Ha! I was just thinking about this place trying to explain to my husband. Searched and found this blog instead. I always enjoyed the RPG rooms, with a random story here and there. Humorously my favorite, and most consistent storyline was in a DBZ room. My favorite show as I was in 7th grade when I started down my RPG rabbit hole as OOCLY (out of character) Lizzy; now at 32 years old, I am sad it's gone. I didn't manage to stay in touch with anyone as I was too afraid to as a preteen pretending to be 18. LoL

I was in the Slum. That is what it was called back then. I think I kinda made it worse. But crap happens right? I went mildly insane, but got back on the horse. I did not get to take to many friends away, but the ones that I did, were ROD. I remember Lost Soul, Akasha, Char, to many to list here. Wolf Khan and I are 20 year old friends. (no we are not 20 years old) As well as a guy named Drew. I know a few others, but idk if they want their name on here.

We use to kill "pikes" on pike poles. lay around and talk shit in the rafters. I made some enemies. But we all grew up and if anyone hates anyone else I doubt they care now . lol

For all the bad times there were so many good times. Chathouse was a double edged sword for many.

And as soon as school was over, I can remember logging in when I should have been doing school work.

My brother introduced me in 2000 to the site. He also met his wife there and lives in SC where she lived. I communicated for several years with a half dozen or so. It was slow to function and people often got booted being too busy at times.
Joe's diner was popular with several I knew. Some of them have some kind of reunion at times. Seems someone also tried resurrecting a similar site.
I think due to it's speed and instant messaging being faster and soon having camera use available, Chathouse became obsolete. I remember my brother knew Storm and Rider of the Storm. He was feindishone with daggers and I was ILOVELIFE71. My brother loved people and was hardly fiendish. It was my start and Most people were very pleasant: at least that I talked to.

My Gosh! So many of these names that I hadn't thought about until today, having come across this thread. I literally just googled the Chathouse to see what would surface and this blog came up. Being in lockdown on and off, I tried a random chat site and after a year, I barely go in now. Chatrooms have become so sleazy and unbearable by comparison. The Chathouse was such a wonderful place to be when I didn't feel like leaving the house to socialise. Just going through these comments I recognise names such as Deez Nuts, Beyond Blond, AussieJen, LadyLara, BrokenAngel, Necromancer, Rage of Lleyo... I spent my time in the Great Hall and encountered so many wonderful conversations back in 1999. I had a lot of contact with Thumper on and off over the years and messaged with her the other day. It was honestly one of the best chat rooms I came across, and to this very day, no other site has superseded it ever since. I miss the old format of chat where people literally used the site to chat rather than hook up. It's what made people in there authentic. To whomever is reading this, I hope you guys are well and that life has been treating you kindly over the years. Take care and be well.

Anyone who was in Joe's Diner, knew Josie. And I can't remember all names but I do remember Michigan Storm, Old Romantic, and Anony Mouse. I can't remember many others. In the Diner days I was only maybe...12 or 13 or so. Easily over 20 years ago.

I was a huge love crazy wild man who flirted with all of the girls, even the ones I shouldn't have. I had way too many nicknames. I used to change names every week it seemed like. I even emailed a few girls from there for a while, but never met any of them. I've been married and divorced since then, and sometimes I think about some of the girls I used to talk to back then and wonder if they even remember me.

2/12/23 I still check back here (I’m up there as Chataholic) to see if guitarman or sunny ever comment. Often wonder about those two. Reconnected w most via FB Chathouse group and stayed in touch with those I was close with anyway. Before long I’ll be so old my memory will be gone tho so I guess it won’t matter LOL

We still check in here occasionally too. It's amazing how so many of us still remember all the fun times and great people from The Hot Tub to the Cabaret, The Downstairs to The Attic and all points in-between.
Cheers!

Those were the days. E-commerce chat rooms were open to HTML and Java. Crazy how you could transport someone to another chat (time warp).
Have the other chat room open and watch them energize into another chat. The look on there face would have been priceless. So much fun to do when someone was being a jerk and needed to be shown the door. Poof, they were gone. They might have been shown the blue screen of death (remember those days). I was there when she just opened the chathouse.

I started chatting in the Chathouse in 1997. I from Sydney Australia was chatting with a lady from Colorado USA for about 12 months when she decided to visit me in February 1998. We got married in May 1998. We have been married for nearly 25 years, retired and in our late 60's. Sadly she has been dating younger guys online for the last 18 months and most of them have been romance scammers. She's finding it hard to live with me because she feels very guilty and I think she may have found a new date, the 5th one. I caught her out each time and told her that the men she's dating online are romance scammers but she won't listen. She has run me down to all our friends so that I look the bad guy if and when our marriage breaks down. It all started with Covid when she was working from home and I was away, visiting dating sites and social media. She is in her late 60's for heaven's sake what more does she want. I have put her on a pedestal and taken very good care of her. I'm not as romantic as she is and that may be the reason but do you simply end a marriage just like that. If I was injured in a car accident and ended up disabled should I be dumped. She is probably going through a mid-life-crisis. Here we are ready to enjoy retirement and she want's to end our marriage. She is a cougar, wish her good luck with the younger guy. Married for 25 years, it's heart breaking.

Yo dude, why you letting her treat you like that? She cray and has a mental issue. You need to focus on yourself, hit the gym, start focusing on your health. And go from there, if you truly want that hag back, she’ll start getting heavily jealous once you hit they gym, start eating healthier, get some gym babe friends. Start putting more energy into who you are and protect your future.

I was a teenage boy that enjoyed cyber sex with the teenage girls in the chat house 😂 I live in Hobart, Indiana USA. We need to get CHAT HOUSE back! jligon4891@gmail.com

22/8/2023 Was thinking about chathouse.com a few weeks ago and kept meaning to find out what happened to it. Finally Googled it and here I am. I lived in a student hostel in '97 - '98 and the campus was near which had a 24hr computer lab. Spent many a night on Chathouse in Cloud9, The Attic, The Second Floor and others from what I remember. It was so easy to meet people and start chatting and the 'real time' typing (seeing what they typed as they typed it) made for some fun times as there was no going back once something was typed.

I learned that I was better at talking to girls (I'm pretty sure most of them WERE girls, haha) through text than IRL, much better and one came from overseas to visit after some lengthy online flirting. She didn't quite match her picture unfortunately but we still had fun. I can't remember using it much after that sadly.

I'm impressed how many commenters here remember other chatters handles, mind you, THIS blog was started 14 years ago which is ancient in the internet realm. :p

I'm sure there are similar chathouses around and of course there's Facebook and Twitter, sorry, X, and others but none seem as intimate as Chathouse. com. Strange thing to say I know and it's probably because I was an easily influenced and naive teen that wore my heart on my sleeve. Chathouse and ICQ were my intro to the internet and I can honestly say I haven't found anywhere to meet new people online since. Mind you, I haven't really been trying.

I'm pretty sure my handle was DirkDiggler or something similar. :)

Wow it’s been a long time! I loved those days. I spent many hours on there mostly in the skateboard ramp, cloud9, and jumped from room to room and talked to a lot of people who probably don’t even remember me. Lol That would be my luck! I was wickedgirl and Darkravyness

I too was in the Last Room...my handle was Godde$$. I mainly talked with Liltool69 and BCEagle.

I love how this has turned into it's own bit of evidence as to how/why chathouse was/is so awesome

I was just thinking last night (12/27/2023) about doing something similar in VR. A friend of mine and I who used to chat in Chathouse thought of the idea to build the Chathouse in Horizon Worlds. I always chatted in Zero Gravity but can’t remember what my handle was.

12/28/2023-It’s so awesome to see so many from a place I loved and spent a god awful amount of hours in reconnecting 20 some years later. I used to frequent Zero Gravity first on a WebTv then upgraded to computers. I always laughed when I would tell people I’m from Montana and they always asked “You have internet in Montana?” As we roll in to 2024 I remember being online chatting away for Y2K and thinking all the computers were going to shut down LOL but we chatted well past midnight. I wish I knew what my name was for Zero Gravity was. I met so many awesome people there and wish I could reconnect with them. I’ve spent the last 20 years traveling the states and would think about who I knew from what city as I discovered them. I am now heavily involved in VR mainly Horizon Worlds. I am going to be recreating Chathouse in a VR setting. My handle now is FrostyViking. I have gone by FrostyRedneck before. OMG as I was typing this out I just remembered my og handle from Chathouse it was Chazz my email is montanaviking@outlook.com if anyone wants to reconnect
