Fort Fisher

Wednesday I went out to Fort Fisher, the last stronghold of the Confederacy. The fort was taken in January 1865, at which point it had held the port of Wilmington open for the South since the war began. The final attack was the largest amphibious assault prior to WW2.

All pics here.

The fort only retains about 10% of its original size, as erosion and neglect have had their way with it for years.
