Arbroath

Tuesday we decided to cut across Scotland and go out to the coast instead of the quickest way to Edinburgh. So we drove out to the small town of Arbroath, which has an important place in Scottish history as the site of the signing of a Declaration in 1320 which proclaimed independence from the English. We strolled around the grounds of the ruins of an old abbey where the signing was done and afterwards had lunch at Subways. Yes, we're Neanderthals.

All pics from Arbroath.

The ruins of the abbey, where they signed the Declaration of Arbroath. I bought a t-shirt with a quote on.

King William of Scotland financed the building of the abbey, so it was only fair that they buried him there.

the importance of this document is hard to overstate; it is the FIRST claim ever that a ruler rules by the consent of the governed ... and that the ruler can and will be replaced if he does not defend the freedom of the governed. FYI: one of T. Jefferson's tutors was from Scotland so when he wrote US declaration of independence he well knew this.
