Fort Mandan was the place where Lewis and Clarke spent their first winter in 1804-5. The exact location of the original fort is unknown, and considering the way the river moves around, it may very well be under water. I took some pictures of the replica they've built, and of the Interpretive Center just up the road.
All pics here.
The Interpretive Center. Notice that they seldom call 'em MUSEUMS anymore. Interpretive this, interpretive that. Bah, humbug!
Just outside are these HUGE statues of Lewis, Clark, some injun and a dog.
These are supposed to be different types of corn, but... uhm.
The expedition brought medical supplies and equipment. Note the amputation knife at the bottom.
What the interior of the fort might have looked like.
The exterior.
The mighty Missouri.
