Scandinavian Heritage Center

Monday morning was spent perusing the grounds of the Scandinavian Heritage Center in Minot. There's stuff here from all five Nordic countries, but the vast majority of buildings, statues and objects were Norwegian (go Norway, ra-ra-ra!).

I talked to some of the very nice, uhm... very elderly ladies that seem to run these places all over the world. Apparently they get quite a few Scandinavian tourists, especially during the summer months and the annual Høstfest. I'm not big on the whole dressing up in national costumes and doing funny dances, but imma say this fer sure: People who only go to New York, or Los Angeles and maybe Orlando do NOT know what they are missing. There's a vast, wonderful continent to explore here, people!

All pictures here.

The stavkirke up close. It's a replica of one in Gol, which is a small town in my county.

Sondre Norheim, the "father" of "Telemark" skiing. He died in poverty on the prairie in North Dakota in 1897. None of his neighbors had any idea he was world famous for his skiing abilities.

This is so wrong on so many levels.

Why are the Americans pushing this image of trolls as nice and fluffy? They were supposed to EAT PEOPLE for fuck's sake!

Leiv Eriksson, the Icelander who "discovered" America almost five hundred years before Columbus.

Sweden's contribution to the Heritage Center is a huge, red Trojan horse. They really must be losing it.

Denmark's contribution, besides a small windmill, is this statue of H. C. Andersen.
