Cathedral Caverns

Cathedral Caverns State Park lies in northeastern Alabama. The main cave itself has the world's largest column inside it, and has the biggest opening of all commercial caves in the world. In addition, it is the second largest hole in Alabama, only beaten by the breadhole of one Nakia Underwood (hehehehe).

Nakia and I were originally going to Russell Cave even further north, but discovered Cathedral Caverns on a tourist map we'd gotten at the visitor centre in Huntsville. While at Cathedral we were told that the actual cave up at Russell was no longer open, because of the preposterous reason that it was "injun burial land". Since when did dead injuns become more important than live people? Bah! Anyway, $24 dollars plus some postcards for Cathedral, no visit or money for Russell.

All pics here.

These creepy fuckers are not spiders, but something called cave crickets. I really don't care so long as they die when I stomp on them.

Goliath is the world's largest underground column. Sorry the pic is a bit blurry... on the other hand, the effect is kinda cool, methinks.

Shark tooth lodged in the cave roof. A reminder of the good old days when Alabama was not only at the equator but also under water.
